Day 1 - 04/12/23

Today I started a new project, and our tutors showed us sketchbooks of the past students who got distinction. I have looked through a few sketchbooks, but the one by Curis Sho stood out to me the most. I feel like Curis’s work resonates with me the most. I have created a PDF file with the photographs of the sketchbook pages that I found the most fascinating. I especially like the layouts of each double page. Curis is not scared to leave black spaces in their sketchbook—their development is presented in a quite minimalistic way, but yet I can clearly see how one thing emerged from another and everything links. I also like that this student uses many unusual materials, such as bags out of peanuts and even peanut shells themselves! Another thing that I have highlighted for myself is making short annotations about my ideas and materials. I think this would help me make the concept of my work more sophisticated. I was also amazed by the number of samples that this student has created and by how developed and detailed some of them are. This has shown me that I can manage my time much better than I am doing at the moment.

During today’s lesson, I have been creating paper manipulations in response to my own images and collected waste materials. In my opinion, the purpose of this task is to help me extract new shapes from the collages I have created, explore the textures that I have created using paper and other materials, and think of ways to convey the look of these textures through fabric or alternative materials. I created a few collages today, some of them more successful than others; however, I am not very happy with my sketches from today. I think I chose not the best medium to draw with; therefore, tonight I will see what I have at home and be more prepared for tomorrow’s session.

Overall, I am happy with how today went. I think I have found some good themes that I could explore in this project, and I have also been quite experimental while creating mixed media collages. My plan for tonight is to find more photographs that I can work with tomorrow and think of other materials that are suitable for this project. I will also think of what samples I can make, since I think that that is what I am lacking in all of my projects at the moment. I will also do two researches that will give me more inspiration for this project.
